Writing and sharing personal stories of recovery can be a profound experience. It can awaken awareness and help people heal by providing comfort to those facing similar challenges and reducing our own sense of isolation. We must learn to be comfortable with our recovery story and share it appropriately. There is a difference between an illness story and a recovery story. An illness story focuses on challenges emphasizing deficiencies, problems, symptoms and treatment. A recovery story focuses on overcoming those challenges, emphasizing choices and responsibility, strengths and opportunities.
